What Were You Thinking?

Image
I am in the process of hearing a Word from the Lord. It is an idea that is very difficult to grasp, yet it is so absolutely important. It is fundamental that we know and understand this: What we think is important to God. It is not just what we do that is important, but it is what we do coupled with what we think. What we think ultimately affects what we do, however what we do doesn't always indicate what we think.

The Bible clearly states that a double-minded man is unstable in all his ways. Well, my understanding of double-mindedness is not just saying one thing and doing another, but it is to think in a way that is inconsistent with who we say we are—that’s double-mindedness. In other words, our thoughts (the root and basis of our actions) must please God, not simply our actions alone. It is possible to mask or to impersonate our true thoughts, ideas, intentions and even ourselves by rendering actions that would cause others to perceive us in a certain way, but God knows what we think, knows who we are, and is not confused by mixed messages.

As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. God knows what we think about Him. So if we are double-minded (in the sense that we say we think one thing, but we think another) then we are unstable and God can’t trust us. Let's be diligent to guard our thoughts, minds, and what we allow to exist in our minds. We have the authority and the power to immediately shut-down the thoughts that do not glorify God—as if they were toxic, as if they were cancerous, because they are. They are poisonous and they cannot live.

It doesn’t matter whether these thoughts are about people, about how to do things, or about how not to do things—it all refers back to the way we think about God. You see, when we acknowledge that God is in control of all things and that above Him there is none other, our thoughts will be those that promote Him, His way and His will.

“A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” James 1:8
